Dog Memes: Some Dog Meme Lore

There are few things in life better than Man’s best friend. So, I compiled a list of my favorite Dog memes to improve your day. We’ll also touch on a little bit of history and dive into the surprisingly deep world of the Internet Dog. Let’s talk about classic pups like the late Kabosu or “Doge” to newer internet pups like Nala. We all would rather share a few things in life over our furry friends; let’s dive into my favorites and a little bit of the labra-lore, if you will.

The original “Doge” picture, Kobosu the Shiba Inu, is not to be confused with the also famous “Cheems” Balltze.

The Rise of Dog: Early Memeage

While I’d argue that internet culture, especially from the mid-2000s to the early 2010s, was initially focused on cat pictures, ala “Can I haz Cheeze Burger” and the ever-famous “Hang in there” poster, I think that over time, the internet has slowly started to see the light and switch to Dog memes. Now, there were undoubtedly Dog classics up there with Can I Haz Cheez Burger, like “Hello, Yes This is Dog,” “Whos” Awesome, and eventually, in 2013, Doge. But we can’t discuss the Dog Meme Lore-Literature without their main competitors.

(Unfortunately, my limited research does not support this, but this is my article, so damn the facts, I am just going to pretend I am right. Please ignore this Google trends chart.)

Here’s a quick lightning round of my favorite favorite “Classics.

Any internet keyboard warrior veteran worth their salt will recognize these, maybe not YES, THIS IS DOG, but it will always hold a special place in my heart.

It’s become so meta; I actually had a hard time finding one of the original edit Doge pictures. Most of them I came across are niche re-creations. I think this is one of the originals shared around Tumblr and Reddit.

The Different Styles of Dog Memes

The world of dog memes is as diverse as the Dog breeds themselves. They come in various forms, each tapping into different aspects of our canine companions’ quirks and a little bit of our own psyche.

Reaction Memes: These often feature a photo of a dog with a hilarious or expressive face, paired with captions that capture our own reactions to everyday situations. While this isn’t something that is mutually exclusive to dogs, or even animals in general, it is interesting how often we as humans decide to use something like a dog to express ourselves. There is almost certainly some big brain study about this, but for now, I am going to pretend I am having profound thoughts.

Here’s a little bit of a double-whammy for this example and the next.

Captioned Photos: Sometimes, a simple caption added to an adorable or funny dog photo is all it takes to create comedic gold. These memes often play on the contrast between the Dog’s appearance and the human thoughts or feelings projected onto it—another thing that people have probably done more than a few big-brain studies on.

Let us know your favorite Dog memes and if we should add more. There are more than a few more we considered throwing in here!
